Adeena Sussman is the queen of the shuk. She lives right by Carmel Market in Tel Aviv, and her recipes (and Instagram feed!) are infused with the freshness and vibrant flavors on offer there.

As we Whatsapped in the weeks leading up to her trip to New York for the launch of her new cookbook, Zariz: 100 Easy, Breezy, Tel Aviv-y Recipes, we ran though different places we could meet for a GOLDA interview. I suggested Ouri’s Market, the new-ish Upper East Side spot known by its many devotees as “kosher Erewhon,” and was thrilled when she replied that she had never been and was dying to check it out.

GOLDA gang, I can’t tell you what a thrill it was to bring the queen of the shuk to New York’s hottest shuk, where we ran into friends and Adeena fans in every single aisle. (Rina! Leandra! Avital! Blake!). Here’s our tour of Ouri’s, where Adeena gave us a taste of how she shops, and the pantry staples she can’t live without (including Soom, Seed+Mill, and Gal Gadot’s Goodles). She also offers easy ideas for incorporating fresh produce into your own cooking:

We shot more than an hour of footage with the amazing Adeena, shoutout to our video editor Brandon Schuster for getting this down to a magical 6-minute reel.

Adeena’s Zariz-Inspired Kitchenware and Decor Picks

Zariz follows Adeena’s previous bestselling cookbooks, Shabbat and Sababa, and has the same fun and user-friendly approach to Jewish and Israeli dishes. Adeena was kind enough to share the Zariz-inspired items she loves having in her own kitchen.

Nurit Kariv, a top stylist who works with me on all my cookbooks, collaborates with local Israeli artisans to create gorgeous ceramics, hand printed linen tablecloths, napkins, and other goods on a line called Nu Essentials. Many of them were used in Zariz, adding her unique style and very Israeli DNA to the book.

I work with photographer Dan Perez on all my books, and he has an online store where you can purchase high-quality prints of his work, including this citrus print, which I'm obsessed with.

You may have seen my Zaksenberg Citrus Juicer on my feed. I use it daily to press every last precious drop from oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes—even pomegranates. It's a third-generation business that makes the best-in-class manual juicer used in every good juice shop in Tel Aviv. They've added to their classic green color with other shades like the bright orangey-red one I have in my own kitchen.

I buy my olive oil by the gallon, then decant it to a cute stainless steel dispenser that helps the oil last longer by protecting it from sunlight and oxygen. Though my exact one isn't available Stateside, this one is very similar and equally countertop-sleek.

How lucky am I that I got to co-create the La Boite x Adeena Sussman Spice Collection? La Boite creates bespoke blends that enliven anything they touch. My Sour Lime Rub is great on wings and fish, and in stews. Rub Adom turns a humble chicken breast into a party. And Herbes De Carmel brings the shuk to anything you cook.
