Susan Alexandra’s Sparkly Jewish Universe
The NYC designer making Judaica that’s equal parts fun and meaningful

There’s no happier place in New York City than the Susan Alexandra store on Orchard Street. That’s where I was lucky enough to be with a crowd of GOLDA readers last month for a special menorah painting workshop with Susan herself.
Susan Alexandra might be best known for beaded bags and charm jewelry beloved by downtown it-girls, but she's also been building out an impressive Judaica selection. (Here’s our pal Rabbi Arielle Stein modeling the Hanukkah collection).
What I love about Susan’s Jewish designs is that she brings her trademark sense of fun and whimsy to objects that aren’t always associated with those two adjectives. And in doing so, she reminds us that our candlesticks, mezuzahs, and menorahs are supposed to be things we’re excited to reach for—and maybe even keep out all year.
While everyone was busy painting their menorahs, I grabbed our pink GOLDA mics and asked Susan about the inspiration behind her Judaica:

Some of our favorites from Susan’s Judaica collection:
This mezuzah is inspired by the glass-making Venetian island of Murana and features fun fruit and floral designs. It’s unexpected and interesting, which is exactly what our Jewish objects should be.
A playful, feminine take on a classic. I went home from the event with my very own Star of Susan necklace on a pearl chain.
Can’t go wrong with a game of dreidel where your picks are a corned beef sandwich, matzo ball soup, a pickle, or a black-and-white cookie.
This three-dimensional challah cover is a show-stopper, elevating your Shabbat meal with its mix of old-school doily charm and Black Swan vibes. It’s hand crocheted and the beaks are beaded. Dayenu.
Charm bracelets are back (did they really ever leave?), and this is the perfect starter set. It features everything from a challah to a chai.
GOLDA may earn a few shekels from purchases made through links in this article.
Thanks to Susan for hosting us at her store and chatting with us. Where should we bring our pink mics next?
And a major mazel tov to The Nosh Table’s Remi Rose Attia on the birth of her son Nathan! What a cutie.
Stay GOLDA,
Stephanie
